What We Believe

Doctrinal Statement

1. The Scriptures, both Old and New Testaments, are the inspired Word Of God, without error in the original writings, the complete revelation of his will for the salvation of men and God’s final authority for Christian life and faith.

2. There is one God, Creator of all things, infinitely perfect and eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

3. Jesus Christ is true God and true man, have been conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He died on the cross, the full sacrifice for our sins. He arose bodily from the dead and ascended into heaven. He is our High Priest and Advocate.

4. The ministry of the Holy Spirit is to glorify the Lord Jesus Christ, and during this age, to convict of sin, regenerate the believing sinner, indwell, guide, instruct and empower the believer for godly living and service.

5. Man was created in the image of God but fell into sin and died spiritually and only through regeneration by the Holy Spirit can salvation and spiritual life be obtained.

6. The shed blood of Jesus Christ and his resurrection provide the only ground for justification and salvation for all who believe, and only those who receive Jesus Christ are born of the Holy Spirit and become children of God.

7. Water baptism and the Lord’s Supper are ordinances to be observed by the Church during the present age. They are; however, not to be regarded as means of salvation.

8. The true Church is composed of all who, through saving faith in Jesus Christ, have been regenerated by the Holy Spirit and are united together in the Body of Christ of which he is the Head.

9. Only those who are members of the true Church shall be eligible for membership in the local church.

10. Jesus Christ is the Lord and Head of the Church and every local church has the right under Christ to decide and govern its own affairs.

11. The return of the Lord Jesus Christ is personal, premillennial, and imminent and this “Blessed Hope’ has a vital bearing on the personal life and service of the believer.

12. There is to come a bodily resurrection of the dead – of the believer to everlasting blessedness and joy with the Lord; of the unbeliever to judgment and everlasting conscious punishment.

Our Church Structure

Distinctives

Stillwater Evangelical Free Church is…

1. Inclusive in fellowship, not exclusive. Membership is this church is based on just three main qualifications: personal faith in Jesus Christ, agreement with the essential, not finely split, doctrines, and a lifestyle which, while not perfect, reflects a true relationship with Christ.

2. Evangelical in ministry, not separatistic. We hold strongly to the Scriptures as our foundation and guide, and we look to the transformational work of the Holy Spirit in individual lives.

3. Free in Christ, but responsible and accountable for our obedience to Christ. We value greatly the biblical emphasis on grace, and we know that we have a responsibility to live out our grace-based lives in obedience to our Lord, and in a way that honors God.

4. Truth-based and relationship-based. We seek to be grounded and growing in our knowledge of God through his Word, and to be dynamically related to him in daily living, in prayer, in service, and in fellowship with him and others.

Church Government

The Stillwater Evangelical Free Church is “congregational” in its form of church government, which means that the membership of the congregation has final say in matters relating to the administration of the church. The members vote to establish the content of the church constitution, choose their pastoral leadership (or to dismiss them), determine who will be approved as members, and what will be the content and extent of the church budget. Pastors in the EFCA are ordained nationally and the local church subscribes to the national Statement of Faith.

Stillwater EFC is led by a Board of Elders made up of members elected by the congregation and by the pastors who called by the congregation. The elders serve one-year terms which can be repeated indefinitely. The elders and pastors together provide the spiritual, directional, organizational and disciplinary leadership necessary for the church. Responsible to the pastors and elders are various committee leaders and committees that are equipped to carry out the calling of the church in evangelism and discipleship ministries.
